We offer a free six-week programme to help you understand and manage your feelings – with regular calls to guide and support you

Supported self-help can help you to recognise and understand your emotions, and manage your mental health in the long term. It’s for anyone over 18 experiencing mental health difficulties and is a flexible support option that can fit around your schedule.

Over six weeks, we’ll give you information, resources and regular phone calls to help improve how you feel. You can choose from one of eight pathways:

  • anxiety and panic attacks
  • coping with grief and loss
  • loneliness and feeling lonely
  • low self-esteem
  • low mood and depression
  • managing anger
  • managing stress
  • understanding menopause.

Is it suitable for me?

Supported self-help is suitable for anyone over 18 who is experiencing difficulties with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress, isolation, anger, grief and loss, or menopause.

  • You don’t need a diagnosed mental health problem to do the programme
  • You don't need a referral from your GP
  • It is suitable for anyone who feels their emotions are getting on top of them.

Note that this isn’t a counselling service, but our self-help mental health workers use some counselling-based skills in their support.

How does it work?

Once you've signed up, we'll get in touch to talk about the issues you're dealing with. If supported self-help is right for you, we'll invite you to a 40-minute session to discuss in more detail what support you're looking for and agree a programme of support together.

For the next five weeks, we'll schedule 20 minutes with you (on the phone, in person or via video call) to find out how you're doing and give you any support you might need. We'll also send you materials to help you understand and manage your feelings. These might include:

  • Explaining how and why we experience difficult emotions
  • A thought diary
  • Mindfulness techniques.

In your last session, we'll review how you're feeling, discuss ways in which the course has helped, and explore other ways in which Pathfinder West Sussex Might support you, as well as letting you know about other relevant services.
